Our hearts go out to all of those impacted by the Moore Tornado on May 20, 2013. The crucial need for safe rooms in buildings such as schools has been brought home to all of us once again. We will be working with our partners to promote the mitigation message, particularly the value of safe rooms in tornado prone areas – as we continue to hope for a future in which the media coverage will have nothing to focus on other than the success of the measures in place and not on the horrific impacts to young children and others.

On a more cheerful note, we hope that you are making plans to join us at the 2013 NHMA Mitigation Practitioners Symposium. You can find additional information in an article later in
this newsletter. Also, please keep an eye out for notifications regarding NHMA’s webinar series. The most recent webinar focused on the experience of practitioners in Northeastern Oklahoma utilizing low impact development and green infrastructure. They shared examples of bioswales, green roofs, pervious concrete, and rain gardens, and how to overcome potential roadblocks in implementing such practices.

Sincerely,

Alessandra Jerolleman
